Hybrid Cooling Systems

BlueStream Thermosyphon Technology

Water-cooled systems are great for handling the high heat-rejection requirements of industrial cooling needs. But what happens when the availability or cost of makeup water becomes exorbitant? Or when wastewater discharge becomes as issue? Traditional air-cooled heat rejection systems can be cost-prohibitive, and are far less efficient than evaporative cooling.

A better solution is the Johnson Controls® BlueStream™ hybrid cooling system.

The BlueStream™ hybrid cooling system optimizes the use of the two cooling technologies in a single operating systems.

Benefits of the BlueStream Hybrid Cooling System

  • Reduces water consumption by up to 80% through utilization of wet cooling when it’s hot and dry cooling when it’s not.
  • Operates effectively across a vast range of weather conditions
  • Offers cost-effective solution in both retrofitting of existing buildings and new construction
  • Incorporates a variety of metal components to ensure compatibility with existing cold water loops
  • Decreases maintenance costs through the use of Thermosiphon dry-heat rejection technology (which does not require a pump or compressor for refrigerant flow).
  • Offers scalable, modular design with flexibility to add multiple units in parallel to handle the largest power plants

BlueStream for Power Plants

image

Water scarcity, water curtailment and environmental impact are all challenges that face many Power Plant operators. Water-cooled systems do a great job of efficiently handling a plant’s high heat-rejection requirements but with continuing droughts and global warming, the cost of makeup water used in cooling towers continues to rise and it’s continuous unlimited availability is no longer assured. The Johnson Controls® BlueStream™ Hybrid Cooling Technology lets you manage both natural resources and financial resources with tremendous efficiency. It is equally cost-effective when building or retrofitting a power plant that is experiencing water resource constraints.

BlueStream for Chiller Plants

image
Operational efficiencies, escalating water related prices and environmental friendliness are all key factors in determining what types of equipment and processes are implemented within a chiller plant. The Johnson Controls® BlueStream™ Hybrid Cooling Technology enables chiller plant owners and operators to manage environmental and financial impact in a positive direction. Our new technology is equally cost-effective when building or retrofitting a chiller plant that is experiencing water resource and operational budget constraints.

BlueStream and Data Centers

image
The demand for digital capacity continues to grow at an explosive rate and with it, the demand for new data centers. Servers and other electronic components within these centers are operating at increased temperatures. This escalating thermal load requires increased cooling capacity and efficiency at all hours of the day, night and weekends. Reliability of the cooling system is critical to uptime, continuity of operation and protecting expensive hardware.

BlueStream and Petrochemical Manufacturing Plants

image
While the petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries operate in radically different markets, there is a great deal of commonality in the physical processing plants - particularly with regard to mitigating excess heat generation.

Water-cooled systems do a great job of handling high heat-rejection. Unfortunately, continuing droughts and global warming are limiting the availability and raising the cost of makeup water. Using a traditional air-cooled heat rejection system can be cost-prohibitive, as it requires massive units that are far less efficient than evaporative cooling for heat rejection.
