World Expo

Innovative solutions for a better world showcased at Expo 2010 in Shanghai

"Better city, better life" is the theme of the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, China, showcasing innovations to improve quality of life by making cities more sustainable. 

189 countries are participating, and up to 70 million visitors are expected. The Expo is an opportunity for the world to see more of China and vice versa. 

The Johnson Controls vision of creating a more comfortable, safe and sustainable world aligns well with the Expo's theme, and the company's innovative solutions figure prominently throughout the Expo, including:
  • Shanghai Expo Center –one of five permanent buildings at the Expo. Johnson Controls was chosen as commissioning agent to guide the effort to obtain LEED (Leadership in Energy Environmental Design) Gold certification and make the Center the first world's fair building with that status. 
  • Expo Axis -- The Expo's main exhibition hub will continue serving people after the Expo ends. Johnson Controls provided a chiller solution and high efficiency ground source heat pump system. This is the largest stand-alone project at the Expo, even larger than the 2008 Beijing Olympics Bird's Nest and National Aquatic Center combined. 
  • U.S. Pavilion -- Johnson Controls was the official supplier of HVAC systems. 
  • Urban Best Practice area – demonstrating innovations in sustainable urban living. Johnson Controls provided the central air conditioning system with screw heat pump and centrifugal chillers.
  • Expo Five Star VIP Reception Center/Shanghai Inter Continental Hotel -- Johnson Controls supplied water-cooled screw chiller systems. 
  • 500 kV World Expo Substation -- The first underground installation of its type in China, and the largest, this facility is the major electricity supply hub for downtown Shanghai. Johnson Controls supplied four water cooled screw chiller systems. 
  • Cisco Pavilion -- As a global partner to Cisco, Johnson Controls provided technologies for enabling smart buildings and enhancing the Smart + Connected City concept. Those technologies include wireless thermostats, the integration of Metasys with IP Phone for room comfort management, and an interactive software demonstration of sustainable technologies. Johnson Controls also provided facility management services to ensure efficient, reliable building operations throughout the Expo. 
  • Dynamic Seats – developed for the SAIC-GM Pavilion. SAIC is China's largest automotive OEM. About 500 dynamic seats are installed at a 3-D movie theater. The seats move in sync with the on-screen action to heighten viewer experience. 
  • VIP Seating – designed for China Railway's High-speed (CRH) trains. The Jilin Province Pavilion features a simulation where visitors experience what a high speed train ride feels like. The seats are multi-functional, serving as a seat, couch or bed. The seats come with an intelligent multi-media touch-screen, inflatable massage for comfort and travel fatigue relief, an energy-saving LED reading lamp, and other high-tech features. These seats have received considerable media attention.
The Dynamic Seats and CRH VIP seats were both completely designed by the engineering team at Shanghai Yanfeng Johnson Controls (YFJC). Why is our automotive seating business promoting railway seats? It's a major opportunity. "China has become one of the biggest users of rail transportation in the world," said YFJC general manager, Eric Sorret. "This is a market beyond automotive with great opportunities for us." 

The 2010 World Expo demonstrates how cities can become more livable and sustainable in the future, and Johnson Controls is a major participant in that effort. "We want customers, employees, and the world at large to see that we are a company committed to creating sustainable urban environments," said Elvis Chan, vice president and managing director, Greater China, for the Building Efficiency business. "Our involvement in the Expo reinforces our mission and vision and shows some of the ways our solutions help create better cities and a better life, which is what this Expo is all about."
