You can grow your future at Johnson Controls

Susan Davis
Talented people are the key to the success of any enterprise, and that is especially true for Johnson Controls. The person charged with leading the ongoing effort to attract, retain, and develop high-caliber talent is Susan Davis, executive vice president of Human Resources. Susan has been with the company for 27 years and since April, 1994, she has served as the senior leader of human resources. During her tenure, Susan has helped grow the company's workforce from 50,000 employees, then mostly in North America, to now 142,000, with more than 66 percent of employees working outside the U.S. We talked to Susan about the importance how Johnson Controls engages employees and develops leaders.

What is the people strategy at Johnson Controls?
Our employees ultimately enable the success and global growth of Johnson Controls. We believe that every employee has high value, and this is reflected in how we manage and engage our people. At Johnson Controls, we provide a workplace where everyone can excel every day.

What are the challenges for attracting and retaining top talent?
The competition for talent is escalating everywhere in part because of the highly competitive industries we're in and the globalization of those industries. Plus, the increasing demands of our customers mean we must have the best people and they must do their jobs well. So the challenges are not just recruiting new people but developing the people we already have so that we can compete and win.

How do you meet those challenges?
We provide a great place to work. We are driven by our company values. We really do what we say we're going to do and that applies to employees as well as customers. We also have signature processes for professional development and employee engagement. Our eXtreme Learning Program develops senior level high potential talent. Our Leadership Edge program supports leader development of high potential people at the manager or director level. Our annual global employee survey lets our employees around the world tell us how we're doing and what we could do better.

What are employees telling you?
What's remarkable is how consistent their views are from business to business, given how diverse and global we are. Most agree on what the employee experience should be and what we need to do to be successful -- such as being accountable for doing the right things and doing those things right.

How do you want current and prospective employees to think of Johnson Controls?
This is a place where you can make a difference. We care about you, your community and the world. It's an environment predicated on personal respect and professionalism. No hidden agendas. We're all here to serve the customer. Johnson Controls is a winning company that's here for the long term, a place where people can learn and build a future. I don’t think it gets any better than that.
