Johnson Controls provides heavy-duty chillers, such as the one pictured above, for mining companies around the world. These chillers are built to operate well beyond the limits of typical air conditioning and ventilation systems found in buildings.

Keeping cool down in the mine

Underground mining is hard work, made harder because the deeper the mine, the hotter the rock and air temperature. Johnson Controls serves some of the world’s largest mining companies with chillers that cool water which in turn cools the air underground so miners can work safely and mines can operate continuously.

Customized deep mining solutions

In South Africa, Palabora Mining Company can produce 30,000 tons of copper ore daily and operates 1200 meters (3937 feet) below the surface where temperatures reach 47°C (117°F). They plan to go 1600 meters deep, or close to a mile below the surface, where temperatures could hit 57°C (134.5°F). Johnson Controls is supplying four YORK chillers and related equipment to keep the mine cool enough to work in. This project will extend the mine’s life to the year 2030.

To cool the air that far underground, chillers must actually be installed underground – a challenge which requires specialized expertise. “Our teams are very experienced having done several underground projects,” said Russell Hattingh, operations manager for engineered systems and service. “We customize our equipment to meet our customers’ specific requirements and withstand harsh environments.”

Services to keep critical chillers operating

Keeping underground mine chillers up and running is a major reason customers choose us. For Vale, Brazil’s largest mining company, we provide predictive, preventive and corrective maintenance for YORK chillers at their potash mine in Sergipe, Brazil. “We have a highly specialized, experienced team that keeps their chillers operating with maximum efficiency and without failure,” said Marco Dolis, Service Branch Manager, Johnson Controls Building Efficiency, Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.

Even in the remotest places on earth, Johnson Controls can provide unique cooling solutions that perfectly match our customer’s requirements, utilizing our diverse product range and extensive experience in this field.
