Conservation Leadership Corps, China celebrates Youth Ambassadors program
Johnson Controls recently celebrated the successful first three years of the 1000 Environment-Friendly Youth Ambassadors program in China. The program is supported by Johnson Controls through its global Conservation Leadership Corps, which engages students in volunteer programs, providing hands-on training that focuses on conservation.From 2009 to 2011, the program’s 1,122 youth ambassadors in China have used their skills to train citizens on ways to reduce their carbon footprint through hundreds of projects focusing on making positive environmental changes. Each youth ambassador was tasked with training 1,000 local Chinese citizens in the city where they study or live, impacting over one million citizens across six major cities in China-- Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Xi’an.
The Environment-Friendly Youth Ambassadors have developed their skills through joint efforts from the Center for Environmental Education and Communications (CEEC) which is under the Ministry of Environmental Protection of China, and Johnson Controls, who trains the ambassadors.
“We are proud that the youth ambassadors have impacted more than a million people across China, underscoring our commitment to the region, the environment and the development of our youth,” said Jennifer Mattes, director, global public affairs and manager of the Conservation Leadership Corps program, Johnson Controls. “It is significant that Johnson Controls is the only corporate sponsor of a major program organized by a Chinese government agency. Not many foreign companies get the opportunity for this type of brand exposure with such a wide array of people and organizations in China.”
The next phase of the program will run from 2011 to 2013. Ambassadors will be trained and active in the cities of Beijing, Shenzhen, Changhchun, Wuhan, Nanjing, Yinchuan and Kumming.
The Conservation Leadership Corps is a signature Johnson Controls’ program that focuses the company’s global philanthropy on the company’s values of environmental stewardship, leadership development and diversity to benefit local youth and communities.
The program was established in 2006 in the company’s corporate headquarters city of Milwaukee. Since then, the program has been expanded to 30 communities in seven countries: United States, United Kingdom, China, Germany, Mexico, Czech Republic and Slovakia.
