Cornerstone Schools
Johnson Controls employee Mark Harris enjoys his time with Cornerstone students as a volunteer in the schools' partner program.

Affinity network boosts employee involvement

Johnson Controls employee participation in the Cornerstone Partner Program increased when the company’s African American Affinity Network (AAAN) aligned with Cornerstone to improve onsite promotion of the school and its events.

This year, 18 Johnson Controls employees are volunteering in the program, compared to an average of about 10 employees in past years.

“The students and faculty truly appreciate what we have to offer,” said Mark Harris, materials engineer, Johnson Controls, and chair of the AAAN in Plymouth, Mich. “This is a learning experience for everyone. It is my pleasure to promote this organization to our employees because of what our employees can provide – and what they receive in return,” Harris said.

The AAAN helped Cornerstone celebrate its 20th anniversary by enlisting volunteers to take part in special events. Looking for a way to give back, Richard Doerer, leader of the Plymouth Industrial Design Studio, Johnson Controls, found a way to connect art and science.

Employees in the design studio worked with students to build replicas of the school’s trademark pillars for the anniversary. “This was a perfect opportunity to get involved with a creative endeavor that really spoke to our employees. Through it, we showed the children how creativity can play an important role in the job you do every day,” Doerer said.

Employees worked alongside students to model the pillars while showing them how to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in a career with Johnson Controls.

“Through hands-on work, we showed them that the processes and technologies used to design and model the columns are the same used to design car seats,” Doerer said. “This project illustrated the power of combining creativity and caring.”
