Johnson Controls was recognized recently for its corporate sponsorship of the Information Technology Senior Management Forum (ITSMF) at the gold level. Workforce diversity
Johnson Controls partners with organization to broaden and deepen African American participation in IT leadership
“We are committed to building a diverse workforce,” said Colin Boyd, chief information officer of Johnson Controls. “It is essential to the success of the company.”
That’s why Johnson Controls is a corporate partner of the Information Technology Senior Management Forum (ITSMF). The organization’s mission is to increase African American representation in IT at senior levels.
CIO Colin Boyd of Johnson Controls
Career development opportunities for Johnson Controls IT professionals
ITSMF provides networking, mentoring and leadership development programs for high-potential individuals on a leadership track. Johnson Controls sponsors 2 to 3 such individuals to join ITSMF each year.
The first was Michelle Greene, IT director for Johnson Controls Automotive Experience. “I had worked in IT at a college, a university and a mobile phone company, and I was typically the only minority and woman in the room,” Greene said. “The ITSMF was a great opportunity to connect with like-minded people who faced similar challenges.”
Promoting diversity and winning the competition for talent
The ITSMF holds quarterly symposiums fostering an exchange of knowledge and ideas. Johnson Controls leaders have been invited to participate at these events. Plus, the company sends representatives to ITSMF recognition events and has a presence in their marketing materials. These programs give Johnson Controls exposure to a pool of diverse, talented, experienced IT professionals, while providing additional opportunities to develop talent from within the company.
Plus, it shows we are serious about diversity.
“We want to attract the best talent in the world and facilitate their career development while providing equal opportunities for anyone regardless of race, gender or nationality,” Boyd said. Partnering with the ITSMF is a highly effective way to do both.
According to Boyd, doing both is imperative. “There is a war for talent going on. When others compete on cost, we have to win with brains and talent,” he said. “We must find great people and enable them to be the best they can be. That’s how we’ll win.”
