Hongta Hotel

Johnson Controls pioneers performance contracting at the renowned Hongta Hotel, Shanghai

In China, buildings account for approximately 30 percent of the energy consumed and total energy consumption will continue to grow. Accordingly, the Chinese government set significant energy and greenhouse gas emission reduction goals and offers tax incentives to promote energy performance contracting, whereby savings from energy efficiency improvements pay for those improvements.

A similar program is in place in Shanghai. Johnson Controls has embarked on the first energy performance contract project under the program. The project, which will run through June 2018, includes energy efficiency improvements and retrofits at The Hongta Hotel, Shanghai.

This five-star property, managed by Starwood Hotels and Resorts, is known for luxurious accommodations and superior service. Soon it will also be known as a green hotel as the project is expected to reduce energy consumption by 15 percent and carbon emissions by 10,200 tons over the next six years.

Improvements include:

  • Replacing existing lighting in common areas with more efficient, longer lasting LED lighting.
  • Variable speed drives for hotel’s chiller.
  • Building automation upgrades to optimize chiller plant performance.
  • Heat recovery systems for the boiler and laundry room to reduce the energy used for heating.
  • Cooling tower upgrades.
  • Energy saving parts for kitchen ranges.

The project also includes water conservation measures, such as recycling condensed water from fan coil units.

The hotel won’t just reduce utility costs. It will also reduce operational costs, as upgraded lighting and equipment will require less frequent maintenance.

The Hongta Hotel, Shanghai, will save money and energy while setting an example for the industry. “We are a pioneer in energy efficient hotels,” said Lin Li Chun, General Manager, Shanghai Hongta Hotel Company, LTD. “We look forward to the partnership with Johnson Controls to enhance the contribution toward making our hotel a green hotel through energy efficiency.”
