Harish, a 14-year-old student in Bangalore, India, (with backpack), is pictured with Cheri Minor (pictured at right from Harish) and his teachers. Johnson Controls donated the backpack to Minor to give to Harish.
Johnson Controls employee goes the extra mile to meet a special child
Cheri Minor was on a mission.
Minor, global commercial manager, Talent Development, Johnson Controls Building Efficiency, was working with a strategic business partner in Delhi, India. As she prepared for a business meeting last April, one question kept racing through her mind: “I wonder how far Bangalore is from Delhi.”
She had reason to want to visit. Through Compassion International, a child sponsorship organization dedicated to the long-term development of children living in poverty around the world, Minor and her husband had supported a child from Bangalore for eight years. Their support provided nutrition, clothing and education for Harish, who is now 14 years old. Minor wanted to see for herself how he was doing.
“I contacted Compassion International and arranged to have all of the details completed and arranged so I could meet Harish,” Minor said. “It doesn’t happen often that a sponsor and a child can meet, so it’s not a quick or easy process.”
Minor flew to Bangalore and met Harish and his family. “We write to each other frequently, and Harish said many times that he never thought he would meet me. I am blessed to know him for all of these years and to finally meet him,” she said. “I was emotional when he said he had a goal to be a mechanical engineer.”
“With the help of Compassion International, my family was able to see where our support was going and the difference it is making,” Minor added.
“We are proud of employees like Cheri who contribute their time and talents to help others around the world,” said Mary Dowell, director of global community relations, Johnson Controls.
Johnson Controls’ global community relations efforts support arts, education, health and social services, the environment, and leadership development. more
