Susan Davis, executive vice president for Human Resources, Johnson Controls
Junior Achievement
Executive volunteers her expertise and enthusiasm to help organization pursue its mission
Susan Davis, Johnson Controls executive vice president for Human Resources, is a longtime supporter of Junior Achievement. “Education is the great equalizer in life,” Davis said. “Junior Achievement’s mission is to give public school students an understanding of how our economy works and what free enterprise is all about. That’s incredibly important.”
Davis has volunteered her time and expertise to Junior Achievement of Wisconsin for the last 15 years. As a member of their board of directors, she has helped the organization think about how best to appeal to area businesses and get schoolchildren interested in its programs.
She has also helped the organization fine-tune its programs. “I became a trained Junior Achievement volunteer and worked in the schools. I gave the organization input on how its programs worked and what might be improved,” Davis said.
Encouraging more volunteers
Davis has encouraged an increasing number of Johnson Controls employees to volunteer with Junior Achievement. In fact, when she joined the organization there were just three Johnson Controls volunteers involved. Last year, there were upwards of 200. That’s not only good for Junior Achievement and the students it serves, it’s helped employee volunteers develop business skills such as public speaking, team building and leadership.
The benefits of volunteerism
Volunteering benefits the company and is personally satisfying. “I enjoy being an ambassador for Johnson Controls, and I’m proud to be part of the company’s culture of community involvement.” Davis said. “The resources available to us through the Executive Involvement & Steering Program make it easy to promote volunteerism among our company leaders.”
Susan Davis has this advice for Johnson Controls leaders who want to become more involved in their communities: “Find something you really care about and get involved. It’s good for you, for the organization you’re helping, and for our company.”
Growth and Leadership in service to our communities
The Executive Involvement & Steering Program has grown considerably since its inception in 2008. In fact, in the first three years of the program’s existence, executive and leader participation increased 320 percent. That growth has resulted from the enthusiasm and dedication of our executives around the world, with the full support of the company at the highest levels.
“At Johnson Controls, we look to ways in which we impact the communities where we live and work and the world beyond,” said chairman and CEO Steve Roell. “It’s a practice that aligns with our vision of creating a more comfortable, safe and sustainable world.
