Deeyonna Gray, pictured in the pink shirt, poses with fellow Johnson Controls empoyees at a Habitat for Humanity project.
Executive Involvement
Deeyonna Gray paves the way for minorities to succeed in engineering, while volunteering her time to benefit the community
There is a tremendous shortage of minority engineers today. Deeyonna Gray, product engineer for the Johnson Controls Toyota Business Unit, knows that well. It’s why she is heavily involved in the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), serving as secretary, head of the membership and publications committee, and most recently, president.
NSBE is a non-profit organization that helps engineers succeed academically and professionally. Gray helps the organization prepare the next generation for careers in engineering. She visits schools and encourages minority students to become interested in the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
“We try to get to the kids when they’re young, to let them know that engineering is an interesting and exciting career,” Gray said. “We talk to them about our careers and how we got to where we are to hopefully interest these kids in taking a similar path.”
Helping those less fortunate in her community
Deeyonna volunteers for a number of community service organizations, including Gleaners Food Bank where she packages food and fills lunch bags for students who might otherwise not have enough food at home to eat. She and her business unit as well as the Women’s Resource Network team also work with Habitat for Humanity to build or refurbish homes in the Ypsilanti, Mich., area.
“I was taught that it’s better to give than to receive,” Gray said. “It feels good to know that I can be a vessel for change and make a difference in someone’s life.” She appreciates that Johnson Controls is supportive of such volunteerism. “It’s rewarding to be able to go outside the work arena and help other people. That’s what we should be doing,” Gray said.
Part of the company’s support comes from the Executive Involvement & Steering Program which helps match our leaders with community and non-profit organizations that can use their skills and expertise. “It’s an excellent resource,” Gray said. “You can see what’s available and where you can help the most.”
Growth and Leadership in service to our communities
The Executive Involvement & Steering Program has grown considerably since its inception in 2008. In fact, in the first three years of the program’s existence, executive and leader participation increased 320 percent. That growth has resulted from the enthusiasm and dedication of our executives around the world, with the full support of the company at the highest levels.
“At Johnson Controls, we look to ways in which we impact the communities where we live and work and the world beyond,” said chairman and CEO Steve Roell. “It’s a practice that aligns with our vision of creating a more comfortable, safe and sustainable world.
