The inside story
Natural, recyclable materials from Johnson Controls make cars greener than ever
Time was, the only way to make a car green was to paint it.This is not true any more. Advances in engines and body design reduce fuel consumption and emissions considerably.
But it's what's inside that counts.
Renewable materials for seating and interiors are at the heart of sustainability.
For more than 50 years, Johnson Controls has produced materials from natural fibers that make seats and interior products lighter, stronger and more environmentally friendly. Here are some examples of the company’s comprehensive solutions:
The carrier material Fibrowood has a natural wood fiber content of 70 percent.
The EcoCor material, based on bast fibers that are used for interior carriers, can be covered in a one-step manufacturing process.
FaserTec, used in seat pads, is made from almost 100 percent natural materials such as coconut fibers and natural latex.
Johnson Controls also uses polyols derived from soy, palm, canola or castor oil. Making foam from natural oils reduces the use of petroleum based polyols and the CO2 emissions that come from producing them.
Natural materials are sensitive to sunlight and must be covered.
Johnson Controls developed an innovative natural substrate material that withstands exposure to sunlight when covered with a thin transparent foil. Eliminating the cover material reduces the weight of interior products such as instrument and door panels, making cars more fuel efficient and creating a unique eco-fashion vehicle interior.
Automakers around the world prefer seating and interiors from Johnson Controls made with renewable materials. The environment does, too.
