Varta Stop Start Batteries

Johnson Controls honored for product, customer service excellence

Johnson Controls has been recognized with four prestigious awards for excellence in its Power Solutions business.

The company's VARTA Start-Stop batteries received bronze at the internationally known 2011 Edison Best New Product Award in the category Energy and Sustainability. VARTA Start-Stop batteries and systems turn off the engine when the vehicle is stopped, adding up to five to 12 percent in fuel economy and emission reductions.

In addition, General Motors, Honda de Mexico and AutoZone of Mexico also honored Johnson Controls Power Solutions for its excellent customer service.

Start-Stop systems require the addition or modification of some of the vehicle's electrical components but with very little, if any, impact on the cost of the vehicle. Drivers may use the Start-Stop system more aggressively, such as stopping more often or leaving the engine off for longer periods, without concern of affecting the life of the battery.

"Our Start-Stop batteries are enabling automotive manufacturers to meet stringent near-term CO2 emissions requirements without the prohibitive cost of alternative technologies," said Jorge Guillen, vice president of Johnson Controls Global Start-Stop business.

Johnson Controls supplied approximately 3 million VARTA Start-Stop batteries in Europe in 2010. The company expects the market to continue to grow rapidly in Europe, and to also begin to take shape quickly in the United States and China.

"We expect that by 2015, more than 35 million Start-Stop vehicles will be produced annually around the world," said Guillen.

The customer service awards received by Power Solutions reinforce Johnson Controls’ ongoing commitment to excellent service.

General Motors recognized Johnson Controls Power Solutions for the third consecutive year with its Supplier of the Year Award.

"We are pleased to receive this award from General Motors, which acknowledges our continued focus on exceeding our customers' quality and performance standards," said Alex Molinaroli, president of Johnson Controls Power Solutions. "We look forward to continuing to work with GM as the automotive battery takes on an increasingly important role in the vehicle."

Honda de Mexico praised the Johnson Controls automotive battery plant in Torreon Mexico, which has an excellent quality and service record with Honda. This is the fifth consecutive year the Torreon plant received the Award for Quality and Shipping Performance and the 10th Honda award received since the plant opened in 1999.

“This award reflects our continuous pursuit of excellence and is a translation of our commitment to customer satisfaction," said Gerardo Gonzalez-Aleu, vice president and general manager for Johnson Controls Power Solutions Mexico and Central America.

AutoZone of Mexico also cited Johnson Controls Power Solutions’ outstanding commitment to customer service with its “What it Takes to do the Job Right” award. The award is presented to vendors as recognition for extra work, taking initiative and doing the job right.

Johnson Controls earned this award for its extra efforts to improve efficiency, track performance and provide superior customer service to AutoZone. This is the second “What it Takes to do the Job Right” award Johnson Controls has received from AutoZone.

“This award reflects our passion and involvement to serve the customer. Both AutoZone and Johnson Controls are committed to our future collaboration and we will continue to do the job right together," Gerardo Gonzalez-Aleu, vice president and general manager of Johnson Controls Power Solutions for Mexico and Central America.
