Keeping San Juan commuters cool
Johnson Controls wins contract to maintain air conditioning at 16 San Juan area rapid transit train stations
San Juan, Puerto Rico, can be very hot and humid. The last thing the 40,000 commuters who ride San Juan’s Tren Urbano (Urban Train) want is to be uncomfortable when waiting at any of the system’s 16 stations. They’ll be happy to know that, under a new 5-year contract, the local Johnson Controls service team will maintain air conditioning systems and keep equipment running reliably and efficiently at all Tren Urbano stations.
Long term customer relationship
This contract is new, but the customer relationship is not. YORK HVAC equipment has been deployed at local government buildings for more than 20 years. “We have an excellent reputation on the island,” said Rafael Lebron, a Building Efficiency sales and service engineer. “We were hired for our expertise and our capability as a single source for all the services the government needs.”
Value added services
The service team will do more than take care of the air conditioning equipment at the train stations. “We will make recommendations on how to improve their operations and create energy savings,” said Joaquin Quinoy, Johnson Controls service branch manager.
They are doing just that.
For example, though Tren Urbano is not a subway, some station buildings along the 11-mile line are below ground and equipped with supply and exhaust fans. Our service team had the customer standardize on new, more reliable and efficient fans. Emergency fans are also deployed in some below-ground station buildings. The fans kick in automatically if smoke is detected. The service team makes sure those fans are regularly inspected and properly maintained to protect people and comply with strict government regulations.
By ridership, Tren Urbano is the 12th largest rapid transit system in the United States, according to the American Public Transit Association.
Now, thanks to Building Efficiency, it will be among the most comfortable, too.
