Johnson Controls commits to substantial ongoing financial support of American Red Cross disaster relief services while aiding Hurricane Sandy relief efforts

When a natural disaster strikes, immediate response is critical. Accordingly, the American Red Cross maintains warehouses, response vehicles, call centers, a paid staff plus thousands of volunteers to provide immediate relief to disaster victims.

That capability takes money – over $360 million a year – which must be in hand, not raised piecemeal after each disaster. To provide sustainable financial support, Johnson Controls joined the American Red Cross Annual Disaster Giving Program, committing to donate $500,000 annually for five years for a total of $2.5 million.

“Johnson Controls is committed to supporting disaster relief efforts globally through the American Red Cross Annual Disaster Giving Program (ADGP) so the Red Cross can respond quickly to assist local communities before, during and after disaster strikes,” said Jennifer Mattes, director, Global Public Affairs.

The aftermath of Sandy

Superstorm Sandy caused an estimated $60 billion in damage to 13 states along the U.S. Eastern Seaboard, leaving millions without power and shelter.

The Red Cross deployed 320 response vehicles and more than 5,000 mostly volunteer workers who delivered food, water, essential supplies and emotional support.

Johnson Controls supported those efforts while also helping their employees in affected areas. Co-workers held food drives, offered shelter and pledged to help their colleagues rebuild their homes.

The company also rallied to relieve customers. For example, when Johnson Controls Building Efficiency’s New York and New Jersey branches were hit hard by the storm, they brought technicians from other branches to the northeast to keep customer sites up and running. “Despite personal losses, our employees responded to customer needs and emergency calls, such as making sure hospitals had sufficient heat for patients,” said Building Efficiency President Dave Myers.

From funding to feet on the ground, Johnson Controls is committed to supporting disaster relief whenever and wherever it’s needed.
