Red Lion High School students talk with a Johnson Controls production line manager to learn how products are produced at the facility and what kinds of skills and training it takes to do the job. The students recorded video interviews with employees and posted them on the YACtube web site so other students could learn about career opportunities.

Career opportunities

High school students build website featuring local Johnson Controls facilities and employees

In high school, students often start thinking about their future careers and what it would take to reach their goals. The Red Lion Area School District in York County, Pennsylvania had an idea to use social media, including a website created by and for students, so they could learn about career opportunities at local companies. The site, called York Area Careers Tube – YACtube for short – would host student-produced videos of company facilities and interviews with employees talking about their jobs.

As one of the county’s largest employers, Johnson Controls wanted to help. A team of volunteers from our Building Efficiency business met with the district to find out how they could assist the district in accomplishing its goal and making best use of the $1,000 grant the district would receive from the company as part of our Blue Sky Involve program.

A career opportunity eye-opener

The team set up student tours at the company’s East York air handler manufacturing facility and the Grantley research and development site. The grant paid for bus transportation and equipment needed to produce the videos.

Students saw how our products are manufactured, assembled and tested. They talked with engineers, welders, quality control inspectors and plant managers about what they do and the education and training needed to succeed. Some students even got hands-on training in pipe welding to expand their career opportunities. [See “Filling a vocational training need.” ]

The resulting videos are now on YACtube for all the county’s students to view.

A major community resource

“Beyond this project, we support the school districts on an ongoing basis,” said Nick Sracic, Building Efficiency Solutions Group account manager. “It reinforces that Johnson Controls is a substantial contributor to the well being of this community, as a taxpayer, employer and good corporate citizen.
