A Red Lion student shown learns first hand about quality control and what goes into making and ensuring a high quality product from a Johnson Controls employee.

Filling a vocational training need

Plant managers at our East York manufacturing facility work regularly with local community colleges to communicate their employment needs, which include welding and other skills.  Six Red Lion area students were enrolled in welding classes for college credit at Harrisburg Area Community College.

However, the college cancelled the program about a third of the way through the school year, leaving a void in the students’ training. The East York plant managers learned about this problem during the YACtube plant tour and stepped in to fill the void resulting from the course cancellation. They created an apprenticeship program whereby these high school students received hands-on training in our lab and earned their certification in pipe welding.

Our plant managers went above and beyond the scope of the original Blue Sky Involve project to help students move closer toward achieving their career goals.
