Bringing sustainability into the schools
Johnson Controls volunteers help students, teachers and their communities learn how to save energy and become more sustainable
Johnson Controls Building Efficiency Systems, Solutions and Services groups help York County, Pa., school districts make their schools more comfortable and sustainable while reducing energy usage with highly efficient HVAC equipment and ongoing services. In a project under our global employee volunteer program – Blue Sky Involve -- volunteers from these groups helped the districts promote behavior modifications to improve energy efficiency and sustainability in their schools.
Reaching out to teachers, students
The project involved:
- Curricula from the non-profit National Energy Foundation’s Academy of Energy.
- Johnson Controls volunteers to train teachers on the curricula.
- Energy Action Patrols whereby students tour their schools to make sure lights, TVs and other equipment are off when not in use.
- A $1,000 grant from Johnson Controls for each participating district to support the project.
Eight of the county’s 16 districts participated. Besides energy patrols, students at some schools studied nuclear, wind and solar power and researched alternative energy applications for automotive design. Other schools put grant money toward science fairs and additional educational materials.
Some districts are even planning programs for next year. That’s a key byproduct of this project. “We wanted to create programs that could be built upon and leveraged year after year,” said Nicholas Sracic, Solutions Group account manager and a Blue Sky Involve project administrator. “After engaging with the districts, many of our volunteers have offered to continuously support the programs.”
Benefiting communities and their schools
This project is enriching communities where Johnson Controls employees live and work and where their children go to school. It’s providing curricula and educational experiences to broaden understanding of energy conservation and sustainability – at no cost to the school districts. What’s more, these resources, plus the talents and expertise of Johnson Controls volunteers are available for school districts to call upon year after year.
