About 500 people work at the Torreon battery plant, helping produce approximately 10 million batteries a year.

Honda bestows award on Torreon, Mexico battery plant for exceeding expectations on quality and delivery

How can you exceed a customer’s expectations when the customer expects perfection?  By delivering perfection not once, but every time.  That’s what the Johnson Controls automotive battery plant in Torreon, Mexico has done for Honda.

In 2011, the plant produced 20,000 batteries for Honda de Mexico with zero quality rejects and delivered every one on time and as a result, earned Honda’s Award for Quality & Shipping Performance.  This was no fluke.  The plant has won the Honda award six years in a row and nine times since beginning operations in 1999.

High volume, high quality

The Torreon plant is the company’s largest in Mexico -- producing 10 million batteries a year -- for automakers Honda, Chrysler and Nissan, as well as retailers Wal-Mart, Auto Zone, Interstate and O’Reilly Auto Parts.

Getting such a large operation to perform at high standards starts with a commitment backed by action.  Plant Manager Raul Arizpe said: “We measure everything.  We regularly conduct product validation and process studies. We meet with the customer every month, even if we have no issues, to find out how they feel about our work.”  Plant management conducts regular conference calls with the company’s other battery plants in Mexico to share best practices. “One problem in one plant is everybody’s problem,” Raul said.  “So we help each other.”

People Power

The secret to success at Torreon is more than process improvements and best practices.  It’s people.  Everything they do is based on teams working toward common goals.  High performance teams are recognized and rewarded.  Everyone at the plant is committed to not just satisfying the customer, but exceeding customer expectations.  The Honda award reflects that commitment.  “They are a tough customer, in a good way,” Raul said. “They have very high standards and that drives us to meet and beat those standards.”
