National Minority Supplier Development Council Corporation of the Year
Johnson Controls is the first business-to-business company to be honored twice as Corporation of the Year by the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), most recently in 2008. The award cited the company's increase in minority suppliers from 140 in 2006 to 276 in 2007. That same year, Reginald Layton, Johnson Controls diversity business development director, received the Minority Supplier Development Leader of the Year Award for his innovative supplier development activities and leadership across industry groups.
The 2008 Corporation of the Year Award reflected the following actions taken to foster diversity by Johnson Controls:
Economics
- The $1.29 billion Johnson Controls spent with certified minority suppliers supported more than 11,000 jobs at MBE firms and generated more than $251 million in wages and salaries.
- The company’s 2007 proposals to customers to work with certified NMSDC MBE’s on their projects resulted in more than $182 million in incremental business for certified MBEs in 2008.
Development
- Seventy-nine certified NMSDC MBEs participated in capacity-building activities with Johnson Controls in 2007.
- Ten certified NMSDC MBE owners received scholarship support to attend executive education programs at Tuck, Kellogg and University of Wisconsin.
- Six certified NMSDC MBEs competed with 400 non-minority firms and won supplier performance awards from Johnson Controls in 2007.
By the numbers
- Johnson Controls is one of just 18 companies in the Billion Dollar Roundtable, an organization comprised of U.S. corporations that annually spend more than $1 billion with certified minority- and women-owned firms.
- Fortune magazine ranked Johnson Controls among the most admired companies in the motor vehicle parts category three years in a row. In 2007, we were ranked No. 1. In 2008, we ranked fourth. Companies are rated on eight key areas of leadership, including people management, social responsibility, quality of management and innovation.
