Internal Diversity Networks
Women’s Resource Network (WRN)
Started by women who hold top leadership roles in our Automotive Experience business, this group meets to discuss topics surrounding the workplace and the industry—and provides an opportunity for employee and leadership mentoring among members. The WRN harnesses the power, influence and intelligence of Johnson Controls’ female employees to establish a work environment that values:
- Professional development and mentoring
- Cross-functional networking
- Relationship building, sharing and support
- Leadership outside of traditional work roles
- Corporate awareness and advancement of women's issues
African American Affinity Network (AAAN)
The African American Affinity Network (AAAN), an employee networking group with the primary objective of maintaining "self-help" awareness among members, functions as a communications link to Johnson Controls’ management teams. The group aims to improve the competitiveness of Johnson Controls as an employer of choice for African-American professionals through recruitment, retention and promotional success. The AAAN has been responsible for the following initiatives:
- "The Power Of Inclusion" corporate leaders reception
- National NAACP Convention volunteer support
- African American Expo during Black History Month
- "Exec Direct" employee feedback sessions
- "Robotics at Work" camp/competition for high school students
- Welcome receptions for new executives and new hires
Regional Leadership Development Councils exist in China, Mexico, and Eastern Europe to strengthen local leadership in our high growth markets. These councils, led by cross-business unit operations and Human Resource leadership, are chartered to grow and increase visibility for regional talent, as well as coordinate intra and cross regional movement. The councils study their markets, talent, and growth strategies to formulate and execute against action plans. Actions from regional Councils include developing strategic university relations, establishment of Diversity resource networks, and implementation of regional leader development programs.
Diversity Champion Team in Automotive Experience Europe, South Africa and South America
This team of diversity champions is working actively to improve employee awareness of the advantages of diversity and inclusion, and to encourage acceptance for all employees. They introduce supportive measures and provide resources that address multiple diversity dimensions, including gender, race, ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age, and sexual orientation.
The Diversity Champion Team initiatives include regional diversity roundtable events focused especially increasing the female share of leadership positions. Attendees, including women and men from the leadership team across all regions, agreed to support mentoring and training, development and advancement programs, and networking. Other initiatives address cultural awareness, integration of disabled employees, demographic changes and more. A special wellness committee in South Africa is emphasizing employee health and well-being, including HIV and AIDs awareness.

The Cultural Awareness Committee is an employee-focused group at the Building Efficiency headquarters that seeks to involve employees in the development and implementation of programs that will increase cultural awareness at Johnson Controls. Employees, representing all levels and departments, host cultural learning activities with guest speakers, cultural expositions and multicultural cuisines.
This group celebrates Hispanic Heritage month during September andOctober. Members of this group are very visible in the Greater Michigan and Milwaukee Hispanic community. As well, they are active in local Hispanic organizations, frequently sponsoring and attending events on behalf of the company. Internal evens include food festivals, cultural displays, and campus speakers.
Diversity Outreach
Johnson Controls has been a major supporter of the African American Chamber of Commerce (LINK to http://www.aachamber.org/ )in Milwaukee since 1997. The African American Chamber of Commerce provides leadership to enhance, promote, and empower business environments and the quality of businesses owned by African-Americans. Johnson Controls also provides the opportunity for employees to actively participate as advisory support for the organization.
Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin (HCCW)
Johnson Controls has been a major sponsor of the National Hispanic Chamber of Commerce convention and is an HCCW member. HCCW (LINK to http://www.hccw.org/) provides educational and technical resources, fosters economic exchange between the business and corporate sectors, and promotes a network for political issues, community affairs and opportunities for the Hispanic population and community-at-large.
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)
Johnson Controls was a sponsor of two recent NAACP (LINK to http://www.naacp-milwaukee.org/) National Conventions. For more than 95 years, the NAACP has sought to insure the political, educational, social and economic equality of minority groups and citizens. To demonstrate our commitment, Johnson Controls provided a loaned executive to provide leadership in managing the city’s effort in making the NAACP convention in Milwaukee a success. We applaud the NAACP for their principles of fairness and equal opportunity for all.
National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC)
The National Minority Supplier Development Council (LINK to http://www.nmsdc.org/nmsdc/) is one of the nation's leading supplier diversity business memberships. Johnson Controls received NMSDC’s “Corporation of the Year” award in recognition of the company’s exemplary achievements in minority business development through its Supplier Diversity Program. Johnson Controls' director of Diversity Business Development received the organization's "Minority Business Development Coordinator of the Year" award in recognition of innovating supplier development activities and leadership across industry groups and across the country. Johnson Controls' CEO has served as chair of the NMSDC, in addition to leaving a significant legacy investment for the organization's ongoing success.
White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities
Johnson Controls was one of the first corporate partners with the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The federal program was established to overcome the effects of discriminatory treatment and to strengthen and expand the capacity of HBCU's to provide quality education. Johnson Controls has supported the HBCU's scholarships and recruiting initiatives.
NBCA Hall of Fame
Johnson Controls has been a partner of and major sponsor for the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation since 2002. NBCA Hall of Fame is a catalyst and partner for ensuring the stability, strength and excellence of the nation's HBCU's. Johnson Controls partnership advances our commitment to diversity and strengthens our business relationship with key audience for business growth, recruiting and general market awareness. Our partnership provides enhanced technical and financial resources to the HBCU's on an ongoing basis. One of our employees sits on the Board of Directors for the organization.
