At the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2009, Autoweek magazine’s editors presented a variety of awards for the most inspiring vehicles at the event, including Best in Show, Best Concept, Most Fun and Most Significant. For the first time ever, a supplier – Johnson Controls with its re3 concept vehicle – was named a finalist in the magazine’s “Best Concept” category, and it finished in second place behind the Cadillac Converj concept from General Motors.

In Autoweek’s story about the re3 concept, editors called it “one cool interior” and said “Johnson Controls almost snagged our Best Concept award from the Detroit auto show with its re3 city car.” They saluted the re3 for being a plug-in hybrid that seats five, has world-class storage space and uses renewable materials. Editors said the re3 was full of cool features, citing the “conversational seating arrangement; the touch display on the instrument cluster that controls the navigation system, messaging and vehicle diagnostics; the integrated seat wing that featured ventilation, stereo and seat controls; a cavernous storage compartment in the bottom of the dashboard; and a 96-cell lithium-ion battery that is 50 percent lighter than nickel metal hydride and stored under the center console.”

Michael Warsaw, vice president of design and marketing, Automotive Experience, said the company’s designers and engineers were thrilled to receive this recognition from Autoweek. “This recognition affirms our unique ability to demonstrate real solutions in an exciting context that drives consumer interest,” he said. “The re3 was compelling to all of our customers as well because it hit on the important issues of the day that people really care about.”

Johnson Controls’ re3 concept vehicle exemplifies a smart environment that has three key elements: re:think – shifting the paradigm of what a small car should be, enabled by innovative engineering; re:new – providing an interior based on the core principles of sustainability; and re:spond – presenting a holistic experience that generates strong consumer appeal, through a focus on human machine interaction (HMI), comfort and interior ambiance.
