Innovative headliner creates unique starlit sky effect

Johnson Controls headliner with integrated lighting adds a unique night sky effect to vehicles in a broad range of market segments

Imagine driving along in your car at night and, when you look up, instead of the standard look of your car’s headliner, you see a beautiful star-filled evening sky. This innovative special effect from Johnson Controls gives consumers new way to personalize their vehicles. It also provides automotive manufacturers with an additional opportunity to differentiate their products.

 

Innovative technology integration

We achieve the starlit sky effect by integrating LEDs into a headliner insert in a manner that’s never been done before. The back of the insert contains the LEDs and related electronic circuitry. That insert is glued to the front side of the headliner. Tiny holes are created in the insert to let the LEDs shine through and the insert is covered with a special textile. The result is the starlit sky effect.

 

Easy to operate

All the driver has to do is flick a switch on the overhead console to turn on the LEDs and select the desired lighting intensity level.  During the day, when the lighting is off, the headliner blends seamlessly with the rest of the car’s interior.

 

Unique customization options

The headliner with integrated lighting is one of a number of special touches Johnson Controls offers automakers to market to consumers – including a headliner with printed fabric that simulates a blue sky with clouds. The consumer could enjoy a bright sky during the day and a starlit sky panorama at night – without having to open the roof of the car.

 

Product differentiation

The 2013 Opel Adam hatchback with the starlight headliner is currently being marketed in Europe. Judging by reaction at recent auto shows, you may well see our starlight headliners in many more makes and models in the near future.
