Making cars and garage doors smarter

HomeLink V takes home safety, security and convenience to a whole new level.

When Johnson Controls introduced HomeLink®, it was the first wireless control that enabled drivers to open or close their garage doors and security gates, turn on home lights and activate home security systems -- all from their cars -- with just the touch of a button. That was in 1995.

Since then, manufacturers of garage door openers and other access control devices updated their products to provide greater protection against unauthorized entry, and HomeLink evolved to remain compatible with them.

Now, Johnson Controls has taken security and safety to the next level with the introduction of HomeLink V. HomeLink V doesn’t just transmit signals to operate garage doors, gates, lights, locks and security systems. It receives signals from those devices notifying drivers of their status, for example, confirming whether the garage door is closed and when it was last opened. [See The Power of HomeLink V].

Think of it this way. How often have you left home and later forgotten whether you closed the garage door? With HomeLink V, you’ll know for sure before you get out of your car. That’s peace of mind.

HomeLink V will work with virtually all makes and models of vehicles worldwide. “It’s a single design that automakers can incorporate in their vehicles for the U.S., Europe, China or other markets,” said Jim Trainor, Global Electronics Product Director for the Johnson Controls automotive group. “It’s a cost effective solution enabling vehicle manufacturers to offer what has become a must-have feature for consumers.”

Currently, HomeLink V is available to automakers in the U.S. and Europe for the 2013 model year. The plan is to make HomeLink V available to other global markets starting in 2014.

With HomeLink V installed, such as in an overhead console (left) or visor (right), the driver can easily open or close a garage door or security gate, turn on house lights and activate or deactivate a home security system with the push of a button from inside the car. HomeLink V also displays information on the status of those access control devices so the driver knows if garage doors or gates are open or closed and security systems are on or off.
