Leather is a natural material with virtually unlimited potential for beauty and style to add a distinctive appearance to vehicle interiors.

It takes substantial expertise, skill and experience to unlock that potential.

That’s what Johnson Controls brings to the table, with the capability to color, shape, texture, emboss, and stitch leather to meet virtually any design criteria cost efficiently.

"We apply the process that’s most appropriate for the design, production and cost requirements of our customers," said Claus Lattner, head of development for leather covered components at Johnson Controls. "Whatever the process, we deliver consistency of appearance and fit."

Expanding the use of leather in vehicle interiors

Leather is usually applied to seats, instrument panels and door panels. But we also leather-wrap small, intricate components, such as decorative inserts and grab handles. These are the fine details that give even moderately priced vehicles the look and feel of luxury.

Ensuring safety, protection and functionality

While leather is primarily decorative, leather-wrapped components must still function properly, especially where safety is involved, as with instrument panels and integrated airbags. We leather-wrap airbag doors in a controlled and repeatable manner. Decorative seams are applied with precision and accuracy to enable airbags to deploy when they are supposed to.

Involving our customers

With Johnson Controls leather wrapping capabilities, it’s possible to enhance the appeal and value of virtually any vehicle in any price range. "The best way to do that," said Claus Lattner, "is for our customers to involve us in the early stages of vehicle development."
