Safety & Comfort

We go beyond regulations and industry standards to improve safety standards

Product and vehicle safety has become a key purchasing criterion. Consumers expect their vehicles’ interiors to provide maximum protection for all occupants.

That’s why the safety departments at Johnson Controls specialize in fulfilling these expectations. How? By supplying optimal integration solutions for safety components (e.g. airbags) and comfort-and-safety-enhancing products (e.g. active head restraints).

At our test laboratories around the world, individual parts are studied to ensure their adherence to valid norms. Here, too, important insights are gained into material and module stability. Once the findings have been gathered, they are used in turn to further fine-tune product developments.

Following federal safety regulations and guidance criteria from groups like the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety are critical to manufacturing safe products. In addition to this, we have joined with the European Advanced Passive Safety Network (APSN) to gain an even greater understanding of how we can create products that provide the highest possible level of driver and passenger safety.

Focus on Safety:

  • Proactively anticipating more stringent requirements from EuroNCAP, USNCAP, and others
  • Identifying safety requirements
  • Modeling safety requirements in Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • Applying controls over safety-critical characteristics

The science of comfort is an art

When it comes to comfort technology, consumer satisfaction is our primary objective.

Johnson Controls utilizes specialized software and laboratories located around the world to develop vehicle seats that are comfortable.

  • The internally developed software tool, called COSYMAN (Comfort Optimization System with Mechanical Analysis), allows Vibration Insulation, Pressure Distribution, and H-Point location to be simulated before prototypes are even built.
  • RAMSIS simulation is used to determine optimal seating positions for vehicle occupants based on their posture, height, and other physical factors.
  • Climate comfort (temperature distribution & air circulation), as well as ergonomic functionality are also tested in the lab.
