Youth residents of Helena Housing Authority (HHA) facilities in Helena, Montana, gained education and career training through Focus on Mentoring, a photojournalism program designed to motivate youth through environmental stewardship. Local mentors helped participants gain valuable job skills and learn about the importance of sustainability through digital documentation of their communities and environment.

The program was available at no cost to youth ages 13 to 18 and offered students the opportunity to learn photography and computer skills, including an introduction to camera and computer operations, an overview of news photography, feature photography and photo editing. Additionally, participants received training on how to build a portfolio to present their work to future employers.

The five-week program was supported in part by $210,000 in annual energy savings generated from an energy savings performance contract with Johnson Controls.

At the end of the program, the participants presented their work to the Helena Housing Authority Board and explained the motivation behind a few of their photographs.
