Energy Star

ENERGY STAR® Benchmarking

ENERGY STAR has successfully delivered energy and cost savings across the country, saving businesses, organizations, and consumers about $19 billion in 2008 alone. Over the past decade, ENERGY STAR has been a driving force behind the more widespread use of such technological innovations as efficient fluorescent lighting, power management systems for office equipment, and low standby energy use. Johnson Controls has been proud to help EPA and DOE in these efforts, and for our work in the past year we have been named ENERGY STAR 2010 Partner of the Year.

EPA provides energy performance ratings for a wide variety of commercial buildings and plants that allows their operators to compare their performance against a national sample of similar buildings -- and to track changes in energy use over time.

For commercial buildings, this is accomplished through a national energy performance rating system accessed through EPA’s Portfolio Manager on-line tool. The rating is given on a scale of 1-100, with a rating of 50 indicating that the building, from an energy consumption standpoint, performs better than 50% of all similar buildings nationwide. A rating of 75 qualifies the building for the ENERGY STAR label. Over 80,000 buildings have received energy performance ratings, and over 4,000 have earned the ENERGY STAR label for superior energy management.

Johnson Controls is proud of the recognition we have received from EPA for our energy efficiency programs over the years, starting in 1993, when we were the first EPA Green Lights Ally of the Year. In 1995 our Building Efficiency Headquarters became a Charter ENERGY STAR Buildings Showcase Facility. In both 1999 and 2001 we were again recognized as an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year. In 2002 and 2003 Johnson Controls was the top participant in the ENERGY STAR Challenge.
