Biogas Energy Solutions

The average American creates approximately 100 gallons of wastewater every day and produces 1.5 pounds of solid waste per year, which must be properly handled and treated. Water treated in a wastewater treatment plant can use anaerobic digestion, a process used in purification, which creates usable methane gas as a byproduct. Solid waste is typically disposed of in a landfill, which also produces methane through anaerobic decomposition.

Biogas solutions can help you take advantage of these gas byproducts by converting it into energy. We’ll take responsibility for the design, engineering, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of a biogas solution that fits your particular application.

Applications

  • Gas produced by anaerobic digestion is usually more than 60 percent methane. Properly collected, this gas can serve as a natural gas substitute in applications such as boilers, hot water heaters, reciprocating engines, turbines and fuel cells.

  • All landfills generate some level of methane, and many generate sufficient quantities for re-use.  Landfills typically produce gas that is 50 percent methane. Even if gas quantity cannot be re-used, the collection and destruction of the gas provides safety and environmental benefits.

  • The most popular technology to convert biogas is to employ internal-combustion engines that run a generator, which produces the electricity. This is used to power local facilities and any excess power is sold back to the grid. Heat generated by the engines can be recovered and used to heat digesters and plant facilities, optimizing the overall system efficiency. Microturbines can also be used to produce electricity, and can be modularized and easily expanded as gas production increases.

  • Large landfills can collect the gas and process it for pipeline gas to be used in commercial boilers for vehicle fuel as compressed natural gas.
