IS COLLABORATION KILLING PRODUCTIVITY?
Open office environments are fast becoming the workplace of choice for many organisations as they can encourage knowledge sharing, collaboration and communication. In the midst of this change, our workplace strategy team has been monitoring how this has affected the occupant’s ability to work effectively in the office.
Since the beginning of 2011 we have been collecting data on how and where people work, and their barriers to productivity in the office, via, All in a Day’s Work (AiaDW), our proprietary online analytical tool. The results are used to inform workplace design, and engage occupants very early on in the workplace design process.
Emerging trends…
- 51% of a person’s working day is spent focusing
- Almost 50% of a person’s time focusing is unproductive
- Focus and concentration in the office is increasingly difficult,
- Noise and lack of privacy are the top barriers to productivity
- On average 14% of a person’s time spent in the office is unproductive
We have found that spaces for quiet contemplation and focus are all the more important, but are not necessarily always provided by the organization.
Survey benefits…AiaDW enables you to:
- Determine how individuals work and identify their barriers to productivity, informing workplace design
- Engage with your employees interactively, playing back information and prompting self realisation on how the office is used
- Receive aggregated results by building, division and department
- Gauge changes in ways of working, improvements in productivity and acceptance of workplace changes (when the tool is used again post change)
