Flexibility key to multi-generational workplace
A recent survey of CoreNet Global members has revealed that flexibility, changing perceptions, and an inclusive work environment are key to creating a workplace for a multi-generational workforce.
Advances in healthcare, economic instability and a rising retirement age in many countries have contributed to a population that is growing older and working longer. These factors are ultimately going to influence the future workplace. Although much research exists on the arrival of the Digital Native generation in the workplace, what is needed to accommodate the needs of older workers?
The joint survey from CoreNet Global and Johnson Controls Global WorkPlace Solutions (GWS), called The Booming Workforce, explored the perceptions of aging in the workplace and what makes an ideal workplace for all generations.
Johnson Controls, GWS Workplace Consultant, Joe Kipling, said: “One size does not fit all. It’s important for organizations to create flexible and adaptable options in terms of HR processes, learning and development opportunities and the physical workplace.”
Key findings of the research include:
- For more than half of respondents, flexibility (hours and location) is the principal reason to remain with an employer
- Job satisfaction is the top consideration for choosing an employer, shared by 75 percent of respondents
- Only 32 percent of organizations actively support the recruitment of the older generation
- 77 percent of respondents believe that learning and development opportunities are offered regardless of age
- 42 percent of organizations offer mentoring programs to share knowledge at all levels
- 94 percent of respondents agree that with the right environment, a multi-generational workforce can effectively use the same workspace
Kipling added: “Although it may require a behavioral shift to change perceptions, there is less of a difference in generational requirements than originally anticipated. Overall, age is less relevant than inclusion for all.”
The survey was completed by 291 CoreNet Global members.
