Johnson Controls helps the BBC consolidate and modernize its new Media Village
In 2012, the BBC introduced its “W12 Program” to consolidate and modernize space across its West London properties. The initiative would consolidate seven locations into five and revitalize the BBC’s Media Village.
Johnson Controls Global WorkPlace Solutions’ (GWS) Workplace Strategy team worked with a multi-disciplined group of experts from BBC finance, strategy, technology and workplace to plan, design and deliver the program.
Approximately 3,000 employees and contractors would be affected by the project, which would fundamentally change the way they worked.
More than 25 diverse stakeholder groups, including radio and television program-makers, professional services, human resources and technology would move to different locations and adopt new ways of working.
The BBC had to understand employees’ accommodation requirements, develop an exit strategy for two building vacancies, and create a space plan for the five remaining buildings, called the New Media Village, to ensure optimal use of space and productivity.
The BBC had the following criteria for its new workspace:
- Predict future headcount for the workplace, while considering planned business changes and headcount reductions over a two-to-three year period
- Overlay headcount data with a detailed brief of all workplace requirements
- Reduce the desk-to-person ratio from 10:10 to 10:15 and introduce desk sharing
- Enable workplace analysis and budgeting
Johnson Controls GWS’ Workplace Strategy team worked with the BBC to produce a comprehensive accommodation requirements brief and then partnered with a specialist agency to design the new workplace.
The Johnson Controls GWS workplace strategy team adopted the following approach:
- Engage more than 25 key stakeholder groups to ensure engagement and alignment
- Agree accommodation planning principles
- Survey stakeholder groups to identify what they needed from their workplace
- Test feasibility of the plans
- Work with designers to produce a test fit for the new Media Village
As a result of the BBC’s insight and all parties’ collaboration, the new BBC Media Village now has a modern, flexible workplace and optimal, cost efficient use of valuable real estate in Central London.
