Economic climate and energy efficiency headline CRE industry leaders’ agenda

Johnson Controls Global WorkPlace Solutions customers and other commercial real estate (CRE) industry leaders met on June 15 in Washington, D.C., to discuss the current economic climate and energy issues of greatest impact to their businesses.

Geoffrey Colvin, Senior Editor-at-Large for FORTUNE magazine, and other panelists from some of the largest global businesses addressed the most pressing CRE topics resulting from the unprecedented economic situation.

Colvin commented on headline news topics, including the recent meeting of the G8, consumer spending and risk vs. executive reward systems. Colvin, addressing the economic impacts on CRE, anticipates a less-focused consumer spend, an increasingly global economy, and a larger economic role by the United States government through regulation and tax law.

Hard-won experiences and observations were offered by the distinguished panel: Jamie Ayers, Associate VP, Real Estate Operations, Corporate Real Estate, and Gerry Guidice, Head of U.S. Real Estate – TD Bank; Merton Livingstone, Leader, Workplace & Site Operations – Johnson & Johnson; Ken Magrow, Director of Facilities, Corporate Real Estate – Motorola; and Russ McFadden, Assistant VP, Real Estate Property Management – AT&T Services.

Panelists shared solutions to the challenges of change management, portfolio strategy, decentralized real estate management, and sustainability. Acquisition, divesture and alternative work places were key topics of discussion.

Delegates later joined other Johnson Controls customers and guests to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Energy Efficiency Forum (EEF), hosted by Johnson Controls and the United States Energy Association, beginning with a special Energy Efficiency Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Newseum.

Proceedings continued the following day at the National Press Club with keynote speakers Lisa P. Jackson, Administrator, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and Kristina Johnson, Undersecretary, U.S. Department of Energy.

Featured speakers addressed a range of energy topics and initiatives. Tom Leppert, Mayor of Dallas, Texas, remarked on the role of city government and the impact of energy efficiency on buildings, environment and quality of life. Tony Malkin, President, W&H Properties, owner of the Empire State Building, shared his perspectives on the building’s major energy-efficiency retrofit project, expected to produce 38% annual energy savings for the iconic New York City skyscraper. Dan W. Reicher, Director of Climate Change and Energy Initiatives for Google.org, presented emerging technologies with the potential to increase consumers’ energy awareness while reducing consumption.
