Johnson Controls Talks Building Efficiency with European Commission

To promote the increasing need for energy efficient buildings, Johnson Controls regularly engages with the key European decision-makers.

Earlier this month we met with the European energy commissioner, Günther Öttinger, and joined a delegation from the Energy Efficiency Industrial Forum (EEIF), a coalition of European Associations that work together to promote energy efficiency in European policy-making. The meeting was an opportunity to remind the Commission of the key role that energy efficiency in buildings can play in Europe’s future energy strategy.

The discussions with Öttinger and his team focused on the need for energy efficiency to remain a high priority in the EU’s overall energy strategy and the need for an ambitious energy efficiency policy to be presented as soon as possible. The European Commission intends to present an energy efficiency strategy in early 2011.

EEIF delegates reminded the commissioner about the potential of energy efficiency across a variety of sectors to help Europe to reduce its carbon emissions. The role of energy efficiency in Europe’s energy security and economic recovery were also discussed. Öttinger agreed with the EEIF’s call for a High-Level Advisory Group on Energy Efficiency to be formed to assist the Commission in developing the forthcoming energy efficiency strategy.

Johnson Controls, vice president and general manager, energy solutions, Agostino Renna, commented: “The European Commission can play a key role in driving energy efficiency in Europe’s buildings. We need to maintain this focus so that the full potential of renovating Europe’s building stock can be realized.”Agostino represented our association, EuroACE, at the meeting.

We are currently working with the Commission to assist in the implementation of the recast of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive and help it to understand the legislation that will unlock the potential of energy performance contracting in Europe. Government relations programs are now being rolled out in Germany and the UK to also reinforce some of the key advocacy messages we have been positioning with the European institutions in Brussels.
