Interview with Paul Bedborough, Vice President Global FM Operations from February 2010
This is at the heart of everything we do. My specific role is to manage and direct the global operations team that is responsible for developing, building and implementing sustainable, global processes that impact services delivery in a tangible and consistent way across 75 countries for our Fortune 1000 client base. We have teams working on Critical Environments, Continuous Improvement, Safety, Product Development, Connect MX, Change Management, Central Operations and a large team based in Manilla in something we call the Global WorkPlace Knowledge Center (GWK).
How does your team bring international Facilities Management (FM) alignment to global clients?
All our programs are about achieving consistency globally. While the teams are based within each region they are connected and aligned globally by program or activity. We drive the programs globally to ensure consistency of approach.
Connect MX and FM.2 are important product development areas you are responsible for - can you tell us more about them and how they will benefit our clients?
Connect MX is the internal project name for our ‘Global Standardization Project’. The whole team is extremely excited about this initiative; it is fundamental for Global WorkPlace Solutions to perform in a consistent and efficient way around the world. This is enabled by the latest Maximo technology. Connect MX will benefit our customers as it further integrates workflows across FM activities. We anticipate more efficient operations, better visibility of information and performance, and improved reporting.
FM.2 is our product development program focused on innovation and development of the various activities and components of FM that create enhanced performance and improved market competitiveness, operating costs and customer satisfaction. FM.2 is headed up by Richard Mitton, who this month was named one of FM’s ‘40 under the age of 40’ by the UK’s FMX magazine.
What route has your career taken?
I joined the UK FM business in January 2000 as a regional director responsible for a portfolio of clients. After spending some time leading the IBM account, I moved into a UK operations leadership role before taking up the opportunity to relocate to Milwaukee in the US as a VP for a Vertical Market in the FM business. I was later responsible for the US FM business and was appointed to my current position in October 2008.
What do you still want to achieve?
There is still so much to achieve in this role. It is important that Global WorkPlace Solutions further demonstrates leadership in the FM industry and many of the programs I am part of are helping us with this objective. Ultimately, we want all of our clients to tell us in the annual customer satisfaction survey that: "Global WorkPlace Solutions consistently demonstrates innovation and continuous improvement, brings best practices to bear in a proactive way that helps reduce our operating costs and drives improved services".
What do you like about working at Johnson Controls?
The ‘can do’ and ‘yes we can’ innovative culture.
How is Johnson Controls different to the competition?
Johnson Controls has solutions for the whole life-cycle of a building. From assisting with finding and acquiring land, and project management of new buildings, to installing energy efficient, intelligent building management systems as well as managing the facility - we do it all. Many of our competitors only serve a part of this “life cycle”.
What one thing could you not live without?
Music
What would people be surprised to know about you?
I bought my first Harley Davidson last year and have become a bike fan!
If you had to choose a completely different career – what would it be?
A formula one racing driver... Back to top
