Surge Drums

Single and Dual Flow Designs

Frick Surge Drum Vessels
The flooded refrigerant surge drum serves as both a liquid reservoir as well as a liquid vapor separator. A liquid refrigerant level is maintained inside the vessel flooding the evaporator to which it is attached. The liquid vapor mixture generated in the evaporator is separated in the open upper portion on the vessel allowing dry gas to flow toward the system compressors.
  • The surge drum is designed and rated for the specified refrigerant and operating conditions.
  • Frick® surge drums may be single direction or dual direction vapor flow
  • All nozzle connections are sized according to industry standard criteria based on the refrigerant and specified operating conditions.
  • Frick® Coolware software allows custom rating of the recirculator with various refrigerants, nozzle sizing based on maximum vessel capacity or specific capacity and modification of the nozzle locations (within limitations)
  • The Frick® surge vessel and components are abrasively cleaned prior to assembly assuring a clean interior and maximum adhesion of the final exterior paint system.
  • The finished vessel is pressure tested to assure the integrity of all welds. It is vacuum dehydrated and charged with a 15 psi nitrogen charge for shipment and storage. This procedure minimizes the potential for internal corrosion prior to being placed into service.

  • Codes: Designed and constructed per ASME, Section VIII (latest addenda) and the Manufacturer’s Data Report registered with the National Board.
  • Design Pressure: Vessels intended for ammonia (R-717) duty are designed for a 250 psi pressure rating (300 psi on 24 inch and smaller). Alternate design pressure ratings are available
  • Special Treatment: Post-weld heat treatment is standard for ammonia vessels
  • Cleanliness: Pressure vessel shell material and components are abrasively cleaned prior to assembly
  • Exterior Finish: High-quality, corrosion-resistant, long-lasting epoxy paint
  • Quality Check: Vessels are pressure tested for integrity and leak checked
  • Prep for Shipment: Finished vessels are vacuum dehydrated and charged with 15 psi of nitrogen for shipment and storage
