Environment helps leaders of tomorrow live and learn comfortably
Cadet regimen uninterrupted while HVAC equipment and control system upgrades contribute to $1 million in energy savings
From 6:00 a.m. reveille to 10:00 p.m. taps, life on the campus of the Marine Military Academy is highly regimented. For nearly a decade within this highly structured college-preparatory military school in Harlingen, Texas, the local Johnson Controls team has built a track record of successfully implementing energy-saving projects without interrupting service to staff, faculty or students. In 2004, the team replaced HVAC controls on campus with Metasys® building management systems. The success of that project led to the installation of variable-speed drives on air handlers, variable frequency drives on cooling towers, the retrofits of two existing chillers with YORK OptiSpeed variable-speed drives and the replacement of an outdated chiller.
Adding up the savings
In less than a decade, the energy-saving projects implemented on site have saved Marine Military Academy more than $1 million.
- Electricity use is down 47%. In 2011,Marine Military Academy's electrical use stood at approximately 4.5 million kWh, down from more than seven million in 2004.
- Water use is down 48%. In 2011, the academy's water use was reduced to just over 13 million gallons from nearly 25 million gallons in 2004.
Facility managers have been so pleased with the results, they awarded Johnson Controls a two-year planned service agreement for the retrofitted chillers. The local service team also provides routine service repairs and parts on the Metasys building management system, variable frequency drives and cooling towers.
