Audit Uncovers Opportunities to Increase Energy Efficiency
Energy audit identifies dozens of opportunities for city to increase energy efficiency, and leads to annual energy budget savings of 19%.
Five years ago, the City of Grand Junction, Colorado signed a resolution committing to energy conservation. The city enlisted Johnson Controls to conduct an energy audit, which uncovered dozens of opportunities to improve overall energy efficiency while lessening the city's impact on the environment.
Since then, a total of 74 facility improvement measures have been implemented in 19 buildings and numerous parks facilities, including the installation of:
- Lighting retrofits including occupancy sensors
- Low-flow fixtures and controls to conserve water
- Caulking, sealants and weather stripping to most of the city's buildings in attics, walls and around doors and windows
- Programmable thermostats
- Water cooler timers
- New boiler and innovative liquid pool cover system to the city's public pool
- High-efficiency HVAC equipment in select facilities
- Solar photovoltaic systems at Grand Junction’s Visitor Center and its Two Rivers Convention Center
Combined, the improvements have a significant economic and environmental impact. Annually, Grand Junction will:
- Reduce its energy budget by 19 percent
- Reduce water use by 1.1 million gallons
- Reduce CO2 emissions by 626 tons
- Save more than $1.2 million in energy and operational costs over the life of the contract
Under a performance contract, Johnson Controls guaranteed the energy and operational cost savings, which will offset the cost of the improvements, allowing Grand Junction to use those funds for other community initiatives.
