Integrated Building & IT Systems Help Achieve Vision of Healing the Mind, Body and Spirit
Integrated information technologies are helping to increase patient comfort and improve workflow between clinicians, patients and administrators.
The Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center in Burbank, California opened in February 2010 and provides diagnosis, treatment, professional counseling, support groups, pharmacy and educational resources in on 55,000-square-foot location. Its holistic design is intended to create a peaceful sanctuary for cancer patients, incorporating art, therapeutic music and soothing colors, supported by innovative planning and the design of the enabling IT and building infrastructure. The Johnson Controls Technology Contracting™ model was used to leverage clinical, business and building systems and infrastructure design to positively impact clinical care.
Putting Patient Comfort First
For patients, the Disney Family Cancer Center, operated by Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, is an experience rarely seen in healthcare. It offers:
- A personalized experience: When a patient first visits the center, they're enrolled in Johnson Controls P2000 security management system database and can select personal preferences for treatment rooms, including lighting, temperature, music, and video imagery that create a personalized experience.
- A warm welcome: Upon their return or when checking in for treatments, receptionists greet patients by name and are able to identify their location and prepare procedures for treatment rooms in advance, thanks to RFID badges issued to patients, the building, business and clinical systems.
- Reduced wait time and anxiety: Billing information and a full record of patient care are immediately provided to healthcare personnel. The patient-set music and temperature preferencess are delivered to an ambient experience system to help reduce the stress when they enter the treatment room.
Maximizing Return on Investment
The innovative patient experience at the Disney Family Cancer Center is accomplished through a well designed IT infrastructure and intelligent data sharing between technology, building and clinical systems. It features:
- A converged network: Johnson Controls designed one IS backbone that can be used by all of the nearly 20 building automation, security, clinical and administrative systems to help reduce unnecessary duplication and infrastructure costs.
- A single point of responsibility: As the technology contractor, Johnson Controls served as the single point of responsibility for the design and installation of the converged network, technology recommendations, specifications and procurement, and systems integrations, and eventually transitioned the operations and management to the Disney Family Cancer Center’s staff.
- Flexibility for the future: Through the use of technology contracting, future enhancements to technology systems that leverage the existing IT network - such as the addition or modification of best-in-class clinical, business or building applications - can be integrated.
