Energy Savings + Employment Opportunities = A Win-Win!
Demonstrating how nonprofits and the private sector can work together to make a positive impact on the environment and economy
Johnson Controls is donating the funds for and overseeing the implementation of energy-efficient retrofits at the headquarters of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). The NSBE facility, in Alexandria, Virginia, is a destination for young people who want to enter the field of engineering. It was important to the organization’s leaders that the building showcase new technologies, so staff and visitors could experience the result of successful engineering.
It's a win-win for both NSBE and Johnson Controls. The project is expected to:
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 81.2 tons per year
- Generate a 28 percent energy cost savings for NSBE
- Create a strong source of engineering candidates for Johnson Controls recruitment
The retrofit began with computer modeling and installation of a Johnson Controls building automation system that will reduce operating and energy expenses in concert with the employees’ flexible schedules.
Other project components include:
- Occupancy sensors that shut off lights, air conditioning and VAV boxes when no one is in a room
- Wireless controls that allow for better monitoring and management of building systems
- Energy-efficient lighting that offers brighter light for a more productive working environment
- A solar photovoltaic rooftop array donated by SolarWorld Americas, the largest U.S.-based solar manufacturer, which is expected to generate 7 percent of the headquarters’ total energy needs
- An interactive educational kiosk, so visitors can see how much energy is being generated by the rooftop array
Engineering Jobs of the Future
Both Johnson Controls and SolarWorld are engaging NSBE members in the training, installation and operations of the renewable system and other energy technologies. And although the project certainly helps NSBE, the partnership clearly is aimed at creating a source of strong engineering candidates for Johnson Controls recruitment, underscoring the company’s commitment to diversity.
“At Johnson Controls, we value a highly exceptional and diverse workforce as essential to providing our customers with comfortable, safe and sustainable environments,” said Bruno Biasiotta, vice president and general manager, Energy Solutions Americas, Johnson Controls. “The opportunity to align our businesses on two levels – employment and energy efficiency – demonstrates how nonprofits and the private sector can work together to make a positive impact on the environment and economy.”
