Rental Chiller Allows Florida Hospital to Keep Its Cool and Maintain Operations

Rental solution offers administrators time to research and budget for the best chiller option.

It’s every facility manager’s nightmare: It’s June, it’s Florida, and a catastrophic chiller failure is threatening the health and comfort of patients at a 480-bed medical center that serves as the only trauma center in the county. In the case of Bayfront Medical Center, a call to Johnson Controls provided a unique solution that kept patients cool and administrators comfortable with the process of researching and buying a replacement chiller.

Bayfront Medical Center has been serving St. Petersburg and West Central Florida for more than a century. For several decades, Bayfront has depended on Johnson Controls to help them maintain a comfortable, safe and sustainable environment, with a Metasys® building management system and YORK® chillers. In fact, proper cooling of the 750,000-square-foot facility depends on full functioning of four 500-ton chillers.

With one of the chillers suddenly out of operation, officials at the private, not-for-profit hospital were concerned that their capital improvements budget was committed to other projects. Johnson Controls proposed renting a replacement, with rental fees to be paid out of the hospital’s operational budget.

Within 48 hours, a 440-ton chiller was delivered and online. With operations back to normal, hospital officials were able to take the necessary time to evaluate options and make an informed decision about a permanent chiller purchase. After more than a year of uninterrupted service with the rented unit, Bayfront administrators purchased a 500-ton YORK® YK unit.

For even greater energy efficiency, the new chiller and an existing 800-ton unit were outfitted with OptiSpeedTM variable-speed drives. OptiSpeed technology maximizes energy efficiency with up to 30 percent reduced energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions annually. It also allows for quieter chiller operation, reduced wear and tear on the driveline and restarts in as little as three minutes.

For clients interested in rental options for chillers and other equipment, Johnson Controls’ turnkey solution includes initial diagnosis, equipment commissioning, maintenance and removal. Rent-to-own programs are also available.
