Start-Stop Battery Application

Start-Stop vehicles use internal combustion engines with advanced functionality. The Start-Stop system automatically shuts off the engine when the car is idle and restarts it when the driver’s foot leaves the brake pedal. When the engine is off, the vehicle’s electrical systems – from entertainment to lights – use energy from an advanced lead-acid battery rather than the engine. The battery also supports the restart of the engine in a fraction of a second.

The frequent on-off action uses less fuel – making Start-Stop vehicles up to 5 percent more fuel efficient than a standard internal combustion engine vehicle. Drivers are also quicker to accept them because there’s minimal impact on driving style compared to hybrid or electric vehicles.

Adding Start-Stop functionality to an internal combustion engine vehicle requires very few changes to the vehicle architecture – so it’s a low cost solution to help meet fuel savings and carbon emission reduction targets.
