Krautscheid, Germany

Recycling factory GmbH

The battery recycling program in Europe, called ecosteps, uses the same closed-loop battery recycling process as our other markets – collecting old batteries when new ones are delivered. The ecosteps program provides our customers with a simple collection process, as well as materials to educate their consumers.

In many markets, ecosteps is partners with the World Wildlife Fund, an international nongovernmental organization for environmental conservation. Part of the proceeds from ecosteps funds WWF's Global 200 project.

The Krautscheid recycling center has been recycling lead since 1904.

  • Recycles 60,000 metric tons of lead every year. After a $35 million Euro expansion, capacity will double to 120,000 tons per year.
  • The investment will secure 120 existing jobs and create about 40 new ones.
  • Using modern air filter systems, the plant will emit a maximum of 5 percent of permitted lead emissions.

The plant expansion investment also includes the recycling of polypropylene or plastics which is used in battery boxes.  It follows the sustainable approach and further supports the vertical integration of our plastics business.
