What does Power Solutions do?

Through our Power Solutions business unit, Johnson Controls is the leading supplier of lead acid batteries for virtually every type of passenger car, light truck or utility vehicle as well as the leading independent supplier of hybrid systems.


With dedicated research and development centers worldwide, our employees continue to break new ground in the development of advanced batteries.Through our innovations we are building the advanced battery industry for hybrid and electric vehicles.

What brands of batteries do you make?

Our commitment to world-class technology and manufacturing excellence is reflected in our global brands, including OPTIMA®, VARTA®, LTH® and Heliar®, as well as through the private labels we supply.

In what vehicles are your products used?

We supply batteries to almost every major automaker in the world including Ford, BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Toyota, GM and many more.

How many employees does Power Solutions have? How many locations?

Our 50 manufacturing, recycling and distribution centers employ more than 14,000 people all over the world.

How does Power Solutions fit into Johnson Controls as a whole?

Power Solutions is one of three business units that make up Johnson Controls (the others are Building Efficiency and Automotive Experience). In 2012, Power Solutions contributed $5.9 billion in sales to Johnson Controls’ total $42 billion in sales.

What are your R&D capabilities?

Johnson Controls has state-of-the art global capabilities in research through product engineering with facilities to support development of a spectrum of energy storage solutions for automobiles. The following are just a few of our R&D facilities:

  • The newly expanded, state-of-the-art Battery Technology Center and Battery Test Facility in Milwaukee
  • Lead-acid battery test labs located in Mexico and Brazil
  • Our European System Integration Facility which develops energy storage systems for hybrid and electric vehicles
  • Eureka Battery Technology Center and Test Facility in Shanghai, China which provides engineering, development and testing to support New Energy Vehicle (NEV) growth

What is closed-loop recycling?

This phrase describes cradle-to-grave recycling, in which nearly every part of a product is recycled. That’s the case with automotive batteries. We developed the system, in which manufacturers deliver new batteries to retailers, pick up spent cores and return them to one of our recycling facilities for use in new batteries.
