RESPONSIBLE RECYCLING

Johnson Controls is the industry leader in recycling lead-acid automotive batteries. Our ongoing efforts have helped make automotive batteries the most recycled consumer product in the United States. In fact, more than 97 percent of all lead-acid automotive batteries are recycled. And automotive batteries made in North America today are made of up to 80 percent recycled materials.

As the leading global manufacturer and recycler of car batteries, Johnson Controls applauds efforts to raise environmental standards to world-class levels. Our operations in Mexico, and in other places around the world, exemplify our long history of manufacturing and recycling batteries safely and responsibly.

Johnson Controls uses a closed loop manufacturing and recycling process, which means a used battery never leaves our process from the time it is picked up to the time it is recycled and delivered back to our manufacturing facility to be used in a new battery.

ADVANCED BATTERY TECHNOLOGY

Johnson Controls was the first company to produce Lithium-ion batteries for mass-production hybrid vehicles. We are committed to the development of lithium-ion technology for automotive batteries and advanced storage systems.

In 2009, we received a $299 million dollar matching grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to build a domestic hybrid and electric battery industry.

BATTERY TECHNOLOGY FOR FUEL SAVING APPLICATIONS

Johnson Controls is constantly pursuing new battery technologies to reduce vehicle emissions and make vehicles more fuel efficient. Johnson Controls is investing $520 million to add capacity for Start-Stop batteries, a battery which improves fuel efficiency 5 percent to 8 percent, with a projected market of 35 million vehicles worldwide by 2017.

Our patented PowerFrame® grid technology improves lead-acid battery quality, reduces emissions and earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s “Clean Excellence Award.”

We are currently the leading supplier of hybrid and electric vehicle battery systems.

SUSTAINABILITY

We are committed to continually improving the environmental impact of our automotive battery manufacturing and recycling operations, by improving the performance of our facilities, promoting sustainability within the supply chain, and using natural resources and commodities responsibly.
