Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM)
Johnson Controls is the leading supplier of AGM Start-Stop batteries to power Start-Stop vehicles through our VARTA® brand.
We supply more than 4.5 million Start-Stop batteries per year in Europe. The global OE market could reach 35 million by 2017. In response, Johnson Controls is investing $520 million globally to grow capacity:
- $280 million in Germany for 11 million capacity
- $140 million in U.S. for 6 million capacity
- $100 million in China for 2 million capacity
AGM technology is ideal for Start-Stop batteries
Absorbent glass mat (AGM) technology is the key to today’s most advanced lead acid batteries.
1. Glass fleece separator, like a layer of thick wrap, holds the battery’s acid around the positive grid.
2. Tight-fitting components reduce vibration and exert uniform, high pressure on the block of plates.
3. Spill-proof battery delivers extreme cycle life and unprecedented energy throughput.

The Johnson Controls EFB is perfect for vehicles with a standard, entry-level start-stop function. When the engine is turned off, it provides the vehicle’s electrical devices system with a reliable power supply and ensures that the engine restarts in a fraction of a second.
Our EFB batteries provide 2 times cyclic stability than standard, conventional batteries and can be discharged more often without any loss of functionality.
Benefits:
- Good starting performance
- Improved charged acceptance
- Longer lifespan
- Maintenance-free
- Spill-proof to 55o
