The Johnson Controls plant in Guardamar, which specializes in the production of VARTA® car batteries, celebrated its 40 years anniversary with employees and politicians on May 4. More than 300 employees work in the battery plant that has produced 110 million batteries since the start of production in 1976. The plant produces car batteries for local car manufacturers and workshops/garages not only in Spain, but also in Europe, Turkey and Middle East.

Guardamar is one of the Johnson Controls’ key production locations. The focus of production is on starter batteries with the PowerFrame® grid technology. “Guardamar is leading in the installation of PowerFrame® grids, a unique technology which minimizes corrosion and optimizes the flow of current,” says plant manager Francisco Gil.

"What is special about the Guardamar plant is the employees’ curiosity for the future and innovations. Since its beginning, new products and ways of production or employee participation in managing people have been established here," says plant manager Francisco Gil.

The plant’s newest product was developed in cooperation with the German headquarters: The new VARTA® automotive MEA range batteries. Thanks to their outstanding heat resistance, the batteries’ life span is prolonged even if ambient temperatures are high – a quality that makes these batteries particularly useful for car owners in hot countries in Middle East and Africa.

Innovation has a tradition in Guardamar: In 1976, a young team started the battery production in Guardamar as one of the most modern in Europe. The plant was not only equipped with state-of-the-art technology, it was staffed with employees who came up with new ways of producing batteries.

Ever since its founding, the plant has grown steadily. Guardamar has 300 employees and over the years, its capacity increased 7-fold in comparison with the 1990s. Thereby, the plant has strongly contributed to the growth of the community in Guardamar. Jose Domingo, Vice President Operations Johnson Controls Power Solutions EMEA summarizes the plant’s success story in the region: ‘During these 40 years, commitment, talent, innovation and teamwork have been the key to our company’s success. Moreover, our commitment to Guardamar and the region is firm and thus shows our history. We maintain a high level of investment and create employee stability, which contributes to industrial and economic growth in the region.’
