12V Lithium-ion battery for Advanced Start-Stop vehicles debuts in China
Johnson Controls’ fuel efficient technology on display at Auto Shanghai 2015
SHANGHAI, April 19, 2015 – For the first time in China, Johnson Controls is unveiling its Lithium-ion automotive battery for Advanced Start-Stop vehicles. The new technology, which can increase fuel efficiency by up to 8 percent, can be seen at the 16th Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition (Auto Shanghai 2015).
“As the global leader in automotive batteries, we want to bring evolutionary, low-voltage energy storage systems to China to help our customers meet increasing environmental regulations at a lower cost than hybrid or electric vehicles,” said Lisa Bahash, group vice president and general manager Original Equipment, Johnson Controls Power Solutions.
An Advanced Start-Stop system has two batteries. First, a 12-volt Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) or Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB), which will start the engine and supply power to accessories such as lights, navigation systems and radios. Second, a 12-volt Lithium-ion battery, which uses a proprietary Titanate chemistry, will primarily accept and store regenerative braking energy during vehicle deceleration, enabling greater power and load management capabilities.
In collaboration with Toshiba, the technology used in the 12-volt Lithium-ion battery is effective at quickly recharging, works well in a wide range of temperatures and can be easily integrated into a vehicle’s 12-volt electrical system.
“With an Advanced Start-Stop system, drivers can save up to 8 percent every time they fill up their gas tank as the batteries enable the engine to shut off more frequently and for longer periods of time,” said Bahash. “This is a great solution for our customers because the technology allows for greater fuel savings without major changes to the existing powertrain and electrical systems.”
In China, passenger vehicles need to achieve a fuel consumption target of 5 liters per 100 km in 2020, versus 6.9 liters per 100 km in 2015, which is a 27 percent improvement.
“Johnson Controls is committed to bringing advanced technologies, capacity and technical capabilities to China to support the needs of our customers,” said Kenneth Yeng, vice president and general manager, China, Johnson Controls Power Solutions. “The new 12-volt Lithium-ion product expands Johnson Controls’ portfolio of lead-acid and Lithium-ion batteries.”
The Advanced Start-Stop battery, which made a global debut at the North American International Auto Show in January, will be produced starting as early as 2018.
