Community Relations in Action
Johnson Controls’ values of integrity, customer satisfaction, employee engagement, innovation, and sustainability have been a key source of the company’s strength for more than 120 years. Today, these values are helping us to realize our Vision of “a more comfortable, safe and sustainable world.”
While our corporate values are aligned with all that we do, nowhere are they more demonstrated than in our community relations efforts. These efforts, which occur in the areas of arts and culture, education, health and social services, and the environment, help to better our local communities throughout the world.
Programs in the arts and humanities enrich our culture and the quality of life for those who live in our local communities. Johnson Controls supports a wide range of organizations -from museums and theaters to community festivals and holiday events.
Discovery World: TechnoJungle
When plans were announced in Milwaukee for Discovery World, a children’s exploration museum , Johnson Controls stepped forward with a $3 million grant. That money sponsored the development of Discovery World’s largest exhibit - Johnson Control’s TechnoJungle: The Hunt for the Next Great Idea.
“TechnoJungle” is an interactive exhibit that opens creative minds to the potential of tomorrow. The exhibit presents real-world ingenuity in a stimulating technological environment based on current Johnson Controls business unit applications to spark interest in science.
In 2003, the Milwaukee community’s beloved Holiday Parade was near permanent cancellation after 76 years due to a lack of funding. A donation of $125,000 from Johnson Controls allowed the annual tradition to continue that year and in subsequent years since.
The event brings together thousands of Milwaukee residents and their families to enjoy the fun while donating non-perishable food items to Hunger Task Force through the Food for Families campaign. Johnson Controls employees also come out in numbers, volunteering nearly 1,000 hours annually to the Holiday Parade.
Education
To build sustainable communities, it is essential that we invest in tomorrow’s leaders. That’s why Johnson Controls proudly sponsors organizations that promote quality education, especially in the areas of science and engineering.
Cornerstone Schools
A private organization, Cornerstone Schools provides students with a year-round alternative education on five campuses in the Detroit area. Students, grade K-8, are partnered with adults who mentor the children throughout their primary schooling. In addition to being a long-time financial contributor, Johnson Controls supports Cornerstone Schools by providing employees who serve as student mentors. Johnson Controls’ African American Affinity Network (AAAN) is actively involved in the organization.
United Negro College Fund (UNCF)
Founded in 1934, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) is the nation’s oldest, largest, and most successful minority higher education assistance organization. As a long-time supporter of UNCF, Johnson Controls and its employees regularly participate in UNCF fundraisers, including an annual walk/run where our employees comprise one of the largest participant and contributor groups. Johnson Controls employees recently raised nearly $60,000 at the event.
In 2008 Johnson Controls Chairman and CEO, Steve Roell, co-chaired a corporate fund-raising initiative for UNCF with a goal of $200,000 in contributions. That campaign exceeded its goal by $50,000. The campaign success was announced at a gala reception at Milwaukee’s Discovery World where volunteers from the Johnson Controls African American Affinity Network served as reception hosts.
Health and Social Services
Countless Americans depend on non-profit health and social service programs to help them through life’s difficult moments or give them a platform for success. Johnson Controls recognizes the outstanding contributions of organizations in this area and offers them strong ongoing support.
Hunger Task Force
Johnson Controls has long been a partner with Hunger Task Force, an organization that works to feed the hungry in the greater Milwaukee area. Employees regularly donate their time and resources to the organization through workplace fundraisers and food drives. Furthermore, our volunteers work in conjunction with community drives to collect non-perishable items and assist in large-scale food sorts. Johnson Controls also supports Hunger Task Force through sponsorship of the organization’s signature food drive, Food for Families. The company has also supported “Stomp Out Hunger Day” at Milwaukee’s Summerfest.
United Way
Johnson Controls employees at all U.S. locations generously give of their financial resources through the company’s United Way fund drive. Recently, employees at more than 120 locations participated in a local United Way campaign, contributing a total of nearly $2.5 million. The Johnson Controls Foundation matched the employee contributions through its Matching Gifts program, resulting in a $5 million donation to United Way-funded programs and services across the country.
Civic
Johnson Controls was founded on a product that conserves energy – the first electric room thermostat. It’s little surprise, then, that our company has been focused on conserving resources and the environment for more than 120 years.
Our Vision of a more comfortable, safe and sustainable world is only possible if we preserve the one we have today. It’s why Johnson Controls has developed and supports programs that encourage environmental awareness and action.
Go Green at Summerfest
The world’s largest music festival, Summerfest has been held for 40 years on Milwaukee’s lakefront. At the most recent event, Johnson Controls sponsored a sustainability and energy efficiency awareness campaign to encourage the 800,000 festival-goers to think and act “green.”Among the activities at the event were Johnson Controls-sponsored free parking for hybrid vehicles near the festival entrance and a promotion offering free admission to the first 1,500 festival-goers presenting a receipt for Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLs). To make all these activities possible, more than 75 Johnson Controls employees donated their time and energy to distribute event tickets and manage car parking.
