Global leadership in diversity programs highlighted

Johnson Controls’ leadership in supplier and workplace diversity has become a global model that continues to earn the company international recognition.

The company’s leadership and policies have earned some of the top awards in the industry, including Corporation of the Year for diversity, and many others.

These efforts made by Johnson Controls' workforce and supplier diversity programs were recently featured in a national trade publication.

“Companies that show a commitment to workforce diversity have a competitive edge,” said Sandy Alston, executive director of workplace diversity for Johnson Controls. “When a company is choosing whether to do business with you, your workplace diversity is a priority for them because it’s a way to show alignment with their company values.”

“Customers want a diverse supply chain, and if you, as a business, can demonstrate your commitment to this, you are more likely to win that customer’s business,” said Reggie Layton, executive director of Supplier Diversity at Johnson Controls. “You are able to talk about a value that goes beyond a lower price. It is a more sophisticated level of discussion.”

The article highlighted the $73 million Johnson Controls headquarters renovation project as a strong example of supplier diversity in action. The company's senior management directed its facilities team to award 20 percent of the work to diverse suppliers, which was exceeded.

In order to reach that goal, the renovation project was broken into more manageable parts to allow smaller diverse companies to compete for the
business. "It was a win-win situation," said Debrah Vander Heiden, director of headquarters projects for Johnson Controls. "We exceeded our 20 percent goal and in the process, found excellent contractors for future needs that we would not have otherwise know about."
